Habitat Restoration Efforts
The Laguna de Santa Rosa, Northern California’s second-largest freshwater wetland, is a focal point for conservation. The Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation leads restoration projects to enhance this vital ecosystem. Their work includes planting thousands of native trees annually to restore lost animal habitats, conducting scientific research to protect wildlife, and monitoring water quality to ensure a healthy environment for all species. Additionally, the Foundation engages the community by educating hundreds of children each year, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among the younger generation.
In collaboration with the San Francisco Estuary Institute, the Foundation developed the Laguna de Santa Rosa Master Restoration Plan. This plan outlines strategies to restore and enhance habitats, improve water quality, and support the region’s biodiversity. The initiative aims to create resilient ecosystems that can adapt to climate change while maintaining the area’s agricultural productivity.
Water Reuse Programs
Santa Rosa’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in its water reuse initiatives. The Laguna Treatment Plant processes wastewater from the region, recycling approximately 7 billion gallons annually. During dry to normal water years, nearly 100% of this tertiary-treated recycled water is beneficially reused. This system not only conserves drinking water but also supports agricultural and urban irrigation, as well as recharging the Geysers steam fields to produce clean, renewable energy for the region.
